Curriculo

SANTOS LOPES, photographer, Sculptor and Art Teacher, was born in Abrantes, Portugal, in 1948. S. Lopes worked in Europe, Africa and the United States where he was a member of the Art Students League in New York. His works are part of Private Collections around the world including Spain, Portugal, France, England, Switzerland, Germany, United States, Brazil, Uruguay and various African countries.

Exhibitions and Works

  • 1975. Arrived in Brazil and settled in São Paulo, where he developed new techniques in ceramics and bronze.

  • 1978. Received the Ademar da Costa Award and also held his first solo exhibition at the National Art Center Gallery New York.

​

  • 1980/1982. S. Lopes was invited to represent sculptors at the 2nd Biennale of the Military Club in São Paulo, also participated in the “Brazil Art Tourism International”, in Rio de Janeiro and at the International Art Exposition, at the New York Coliseum.  He also participated in group exhibitions, at the Contemporary Art Museum of Sao Paulo, at the Embassy of Portugal in Brasilia and at the Art Museum of São Paulo in the exhibition "100 Years of Sculpture in Brazil"

  • 1983-1985. Retrospective exhibition of all of his work at the "Pinacoteca Museum", in São Paulo, representing Portugal In “ Encontros com a Cultura portuguesa “  and he also exhibited individually at the Galeria Arte Aplicada, in São Paulo,  Galeria Arte Pura, in Rio de Janeiro,  the Galeria Performance in Brasilia and in Goiania at the Multiarte Gallery.

  • 1989-1990. Exhibition at Galeria Skultura in São Paulo and participated in the 12th Art-Expo in New York, at the Jacob Javits Convention Center.

  • 1991-1993. Exhibition “Bronzes and Marbles”, at the Museum of Contemporary Art in Campinas, Brazil and exhibition of small bronze sculptures at Gallery "Painen" in Berlin Germany.

​

  • 1994-1995. Exhibitions at the André Art Gallery in São Paulo and in Campinas, at the “Centro de Convivência Cultural” Galleries.  In this period Santos was selected to represent Brazil in the “Kawaguchi Public Art” Catalogue, which contains selected works from 23 world artists.

  • 1998-2000. Commissioned by the department of culture of Sao Paulo, He built the Bronze monument “St. Peter Fisherman” in Mongaguá and in São Paulo, the monument to the “Democratic Culture” in honor of Franco Montoro. Commissioned by the Compac Computer Corporation of São Paulo he created an edition of 100 bronze pieces to commemorate a special achievement of the company.

  • 2004-2006. In Portugal, S. Lopes held exhibitions at the Municipal gallery of Sintra National Museum, at the Abrantes Municipal Gallery and also at Castelo de Vide municipal Gallery. In Brazil, he exhibited at the “Nova Galeria André” in São Paulo.

  • 2007/2009. The very successful new collection of his work was exhibited in Spain at the “National Caceres Museum” and in Portugal at the “Galeria do Castelo” in Castelo de Vide.

​

  • 2010. Exhibition “Bronzes and Rereading Canvas” at the Movement Contemporary Art Gallery MAC in Lisbon.

​

  • 2011. Conceptual exhibition at “San Giuseppe” Cultural Center in Alba - Italy.

​

  • 2013/2014. Retrospective exhibitions with simultaneous release of his book “Escultura - o sonho e a Técnica” ("Sculpture - Dream and Techniques") at the Municipal Library in Abrantes and at the Municipal Gallery, in Castelo de Vide in Portugal.

​

  • 2017. . He held the exhibition “Bronze Sculptures and Rereadings Canvas”, at the National Society of Fine Arts in Lisbon.
